Feel like you can’t catch a break? If you’ve been stressed this summer, today’s your day to take a step back and focus on relaxing. August 15 is National Relaxation Day and you can celebrate by being mindful of your thoughts and actions throughout the entirety of your day. Here’s how to get started…

Get Up on the Right Side of the Bed

The best way to have a great day is to have a great morning! Refrain from checking your phone and emails as soon as you wake up. That’s just stress waiting to happen. Instead, get up and do some quick morning yoga or simple stretches. This will help your mind stay calm and get prepared for the rest of the day. Finish out the morning routine by choosing to eat a healthy breakfast before work. Preparing a smoothie for yourself is a great way to incorporate healthy food choices into your morning routines. Smoothies are easy to make and contain tons of ingredients that are good for your body. By starting the morning off right, you’ll be putting your best foot forward during the rest of your day.

Staying Relaxed at Work

Going to work shouldn’t stop you from destressing throughout the day! To start, know that your overly cluttered desk is doing nothing to help your stress levels. In fact, it’s making it worse. Take a moment to organize your papers and straighten your folders. Don’t forget about your virtual desktop too. Once everything is organized, make a list of everything you need to do. Visualizing your tasks will help you tackle them one at a time. Then, make the most of your lunch break by taking a quick walk or chit-chatting with a co-worker to focus on something other than your work and deadlines.

At the End of the Day

Finish out your day by spending time with the people that make you happy. Watch a funny movie with your family or friends and laugh your stress away. Later, make sure to unplug from your electronics at least an hour before you plan to fall asleep. The break from your screens will allow natural melatonin to be released which will give you a peaceful sleep. If not checking your phone before bed is impossible, you should turn the screen brightness down and keep your electronics about 14 inches away from your face. Finally, before bed, practice deep breathing techniques. This will put you in a calmer state and help you quickly drift off to sleep.

Your mind and body will thank you for the relaxing day. But, remember, focusing on unwinding and destressing shouldn’t be limited to August 15. Concentrate on using a few, or all, of these tips to continue to incorporate relaxation into your everyday life. You deserve it.
