Release Train Engineer

Job Summary: The release train engineer, or RTE, is a servant leader and the chief Scrum Master for the ART. The RTE facilitates optimizing the flow of value through the program using various mechanisms, such as the Program Kanban, Inspect & Adapt workshop, PI Planning, and more. RTEs typically report to the development organization or an Agile PMO. For enterprises with existing PMO organizations, a program manager often plays this role.


  • Working with the ART team who prioritizes & estimates the features to be considered in the next program increment (PI)
  • Managing and optimizing the flow of value through the ART
  • Facilitating PI Planning readiness
  • Facilitating the ART ceremonies including: PI Planning Event, ART syncs , System Demos, Program Backlog Refinement, and Inspect & Adapt workshops
  • Aggregating Team PI Objectives into Program PI Objectives
  • Assisting with execution and feature completion tracking
  • Tracking and publishing metrics for the train
  • Helping manage risks and dependencies
  • Escalating and tracking impediments
  • Providing input on resourcing to address critical bottlenecks
  • Driving relentless improvement
