KM's Favorite Reads [National Read Across America Day]

KM_Reads-01

In honor of everyone’s favorite medical professional, Dr. Suess, we celebrate his birthday every March 2nd with Read Across America Day. We at KellyMitchell love books of all genres, and while our list of recommendations could fill a book on its own (with quite a few shout outs to Harry Potter because, obviously), we wanted to share a few of our recent favorites:

Shoe Dog – Phil Knight

Mark LoCigno

I loved this book because it not only talked about early stage business, but more importantly of the human spirit, team connectiveness and drive and determination to achieve your vision. Knight’s memoirs share many personal stories and is a rollercoaster of emotions along the way. An enjoyable read on many levels.

Conversational Capacity – Craig Weber

Rebecca Boyer

Anyone with organizational experience will find something in this book that resonates with them. Weber encourages adaptive learning – seeking out differing opinions to teach us more about our own point of views, making it possible to utilize a perspective conflict to grow as a person. Definitely a great pick for your team to read!

Lauren Sutton: “Girl, Wash Your Face” – Rachel Hollis

Title aside, it has something for everyone when it comes to life advice and ways to achieve personal growth. It is a great story that is entertaining and informative – and at times really funny!

The Couple Next Door – Shari Lapena

Gretchen Olwig

If you’re a fan of Girl on the Train, Gone Girl, etc. then you’ll enjoy this one! A lot of twists and definitely a quick read!

A Thousand Splendid Suns – Khaled Hosseini

Ali Dellinger

About a woman named Mariam who grew up in Afghanistan. It goes through the hardships of her not having a father figure, an arranged marriage and eventually living in polyandry. It’s a sad, yet heartfelt book that gives you great insight on how women are treated in the Middle East

Chesapeake – James Michener

Vincent Hames-Frazier

Highly recommend if you like epic historical fiction a la Ken Follett. The author takes real world locations and follows fictional regional inhabitants from B.C. through modern times.

The Wife Between Us – Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Lauren King

I’m a big fan of books that pack a powerful, suspenseful punch. If you like a dark little twist I’d highly recommend!

The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood

Katyann Quinn

I started reading it because of the accolades the show received and really enjoyed it – it was a very good read and it is something that seems like it really could happen someday.

The Unpersuadables – Will Storr

Lizzie Martin

Really enjoyed this read – it was a great balance of journalism and memoir. The author allows people to tell their own story without his bias, and they are interlaced with funny and sometimes shocking anecdotes.

You are a Badass – Jen Sincero

Anne Torti

This book has great advice on identifying your goals and helping you accomplish them. One of my favorite lines was “If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.” It really challenges your perspective on success.

We love the entertainment value of a good book but remember: reading does way more than entertain: it reduces stress, expands your vocabulary, improves your memory, and gives you stronger analytical thinking skills! Perhaps Dr. Suess says it best: The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
