The kids are home, you’re working from home, and we are all doing our best to maintain normalcy while we navigate unchartered territories. Fear not! We’ve compiled a list of activities that are sure to keep you and your kiddos occupied and counteract cabin fever, while still practicing safe social distancing.
Go for a Scenic Drive
Whether it be through a historic neighborhood, to a scenic lookout, or a drive-through safari park, going for a drive is a great activity to do with anyone in your household you’re already social distancing with. It keeps both you in the car and those outside safe from the spread of germs while getting to spend the day outside with your family while maintaining social distances.
If your city doesn’t have a safari park or animal reserve specifically set up for this type of activity, google self-guided driving tours in your area. These will often come with directions and sometimes even audio guides to explain to you what you’re seeing.
Learn a New Skill
Right now is a great time to dive into some of those online tutorials for hobbies or skills you haven’t had the time to do before. Maybe you want to try baking some new recipes. Or perhaps you want to learn to crochet. What about mastering some basic coding? Whatever you’re interested in you can find free tutorials on YouTube or started a free two-month subscription on a site like Skillshare! The best part about this is that there’s sure to be options for the whole family regardless of skill level or age.
Work Out
You are unable to physically go to the gym at this time but who’s to say you can not make your own “gym” from the comfort of your home. Clear out a space for yourself and pop in that workout video you’ve justified holding onto since 1995. Or better yet, there are hundreds of online workout sessions you can try ranging from hip hop dance to a relaxing yoga meditation session.
Use those gallon water jugs you have on standby as dumbbells and get to work. Contact your favorite trainer and see if they would be willing to do a session with you via Facetime or Skype. Take advantage of this time and do not stop taking care of yourself just because you can not physically go to the gym. Now is the time your body and mind need exercise the most!
Family Game Night
Having a game night with your family is a great way to occupy your time and mind. Dust off the old monopoly game in the attic and have some fun! If you do not own any board games there are plenty you can download onto your smart television and play from your cellular devices such as Fibbage.
If you are looking for something you can do as a single-player there are plenty of activities like working on a crossword puzzle, sudoku or a classic game of solitaire. Tons of these options have printable versions as well if you need something to keep the kiddos preoccupied.
No matter how you chose to spend your time during this period, keep in mind that this is only temporary. Use this time to let your inner homebody shine and accomplish the tasks you could never dream of having enough time to do. Wake up early, have a cup of coffee, make yourself presentable, even though you may not be going anywhere, and find comfort in the fact that we are all in this together.
