Everyone experiences slumps and setbacks, but it’s how one reacts to those experiences that determines success moving forward. Consider these tips for overcoming obstacles, and “keep going when the going gets tough!”
Acknowledge that “Things Happen!”
Whether a small setback or a major defeat, accepting such hurdles as a natural part of life is the first step to being able to move on. Rather than dwelling on the issue or allowing resentment to grow, try to remain calm and focused so you’re able to tackle the next big goal on the horizon.
Focus on What You Can Control.
Draw your attention to what you can do or fix and “control the controllable.” Let go of the rest! Break down tasks into manageable pieces and complete them one by one. Consider creating lists or reminders to keep yourself organized and on track. Don’t forget to acknowledge and highlight each of your accomplishments [big or small] along the way, too.
Rely on Your Support People.
It may be tempting to turn inward at times of setback and isolate from others. Consider reaching out for advice from supportive friends or colleagues who have your best interest in mind. Even just a dose of laughter and positivity can help clear your mind and bring perspective to the situation.
Learn From the Experience.
Despite what life throws at us in our career or personal lives, there is always an opportunity to learn and grow. Recognize the take-aways and even jot them down if it motivates you from a self-improvement perspective. Nonetheless, find meaning in the setback that you can turn into personal strengths moving forward.
Live Outside Your Comfort Zone.
Don’t allow a setback to hold you back or hinder your aspirations. The experiences we value most in life are often the most challenging, but ultimately the most rewarding once conquered. It’s all about the outlook — “If you are positive, you’ll see opportunities instead of obstacles.” [Widad Akrawi]
