We all know about the infamous, Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. Whether you’ve tried it or not, what Starbucks has done in terms of branding the PSL is legendary. So as you approach your personal branding in preparation for your job search here are some tips we can all learn from the PSL.
Pumpkin Spice Everywhere
One of the reasons the PSL is such a sensation is because it’s everywhere. Starbucks has even created a Twitter profile for the self-proclaimed “official beverage of fall”. As a job seeker, the onus is on you to be accessible to hiring managers. We’re not saying to pull all the privacy setting off your Facebook photos from college but consider picking 2-3 social platforms that you can share job-related content on. This helps build your persona as a subject matter expert and makes you a credible applicant simultaneously.
Get It While It’s Hot
Like the PSL, an open position will only be around for a short period of time. Online job board site, Indeed, recently posted a study that stated that 43% jobs are filled within the first 30 days. Seize the opportunity and get it while it’s still fresh and around! You could miss out an incredible opportunity (or drink) if you don’t.
Don’t Be Afraid Spice It Up
Sure the original Pumpkin Spice Latte is great but every now and then you might want to mix it up with some cinnamon dolce or mocha syrup. Those twists should inspire you to spice it up when it comes to your job hunt. Don’t be afraid to add a little zest to your resume or LinkedIn profile. Employers love to see that you know how to stay on trend but also take it to the next level and those risks will often reward you.
And Remember There’s Only One You
While the Starbucks PSL may have started the pumpkin craze, we’ve seen plenty of imitators in the time since. The PSL has paid zero attention to those knock-offs and you should remember to do the same. During your job search, you might get inundated with outside opinions or caught up in the competition. Take a page from the PSL’s book and just keep doing you. That’s the focus that’s going to land you in the right spot.
