Work Advice From Awesome People

Work Advice from awesome people

From Warren Buffet to Tina Fey, we’ve heard a multitude of one-liners that can help us get through even the worst “case of the Mondays” or soothe the sting of the most unexpected “we went with another candidate” burns. In case you are in need of a little pick-me-up, we thought we would gather a few of our favorites, and some you maybe haven’t heard yet, for a handy little reminder that everything will be juuuust fine.

Warren Buffet –

“The most important investment you can make is in yourself.”

Investor whiz Warren Buffet believes if you focus on developing yourself and your skills and you will see a return on your investment in the form of your success. Those who just clock in and out won’t see the same growth and prosperity as those who go out of their way to cultivate new skills or habits. Debating the value of a course, seminar or going back to school? Remember Mr. Buffet’s wise words. In the long run, those investments will undoubtedly open new doors for you.

Jerry Seinfeld

“Don’t break the chain.”

Productivity has just become a game thanks to Jerry Seinfeld. When aspiring comic Brad Isaac asked Seinfeld if he has any advice, he explained he stays productive by knowing he has to do some writing every day in order to not break the chain he created by putting a large red X on a calendar in his office for each day he writes. This daily exercise in consistency can work for all areas of one’s life from writing code to running a marathon.

Seth Godin

“Don’t wait to get picked, pick yourself.”

The simplest explanation for Seth’s “pick yourself” mantra is that in today’s world, if your gatekeepers aren’t showing up for you, you don’t need them. No more waiting for authorization to do more of what you’re great at, for your video to get published, or someone to start a book club and invite you to it. You now can just go ahead and start doing that yourself, you have the ability to be your own boss, to make your own video, to publish your own writing, to start your own club. Don’t wait to get picked, pick yourself.

Tina Fey

“Say yes. You’ll figure it out afterwards.”

The Bossy Pants author is certainly no stranger to success and what it takes to build an empire. We can all often get stuck in ruts that hold us back from achieving our goals. Tina’s quote reminds us that we are capable and it’s better to figure it out as you go then to hesitate and miss out on an opportunity. If you are driven to do something then you will figure out a way to get there. But it starts with saying ‘yes’.

Dalai Lama

“Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.”

If you find yourself passed over for a position you were really confident you deserved, it’s likely you were seeing the role through rose colored glassses. While you have been excited about all the ways the role would be great up until now, you probably didn’t give much thought to the downside. You may be surprised how easy it is to list all the ways it would have been a bad move. These things just have a way of working out for the best, so don’t get too down on yourself and get back out there and win the next one.
