There aren’t a whole lot of things brighter than a Software Development Manager’s future. Just ask InformationManagement.com, which says the job growth for SDMs is expected to be 17 percent from 2014 to 2024. If you prefer living in “the now”, it’s currently ranked number four on Glassdoor’s list of Highest Paying jobs in America for 2016, so the present isn’t looking too bad either.
You Are a Details Pro
If you tend to notice patterns in the most unlikely places, find it hard not to correct someone’s grammar, and your favorite bar game was photo hunt, you might be a Software Development Manager. Even the greatest SDMs miss plenty of minor details in the development process, you just have to almost enjoy going over your work and that of others with a fine-tooth comb to find those misses.
As a manager, you may be over entire teams or divisions, responsible for leading the development of test strategies, formal test plans, and system configurations. You don’t make the big bucks for anything!
You’re a Real People-Person
If you were voted most likely to be friends with everyone at your high school, you might make a great Software Development Manager. As a development leader, you need to be able to communicate effectively with all parties. This means talking the talk with the stakeholders on the business side and then relaying that message to your most technically-minded team member and vice versa.
